Collaborative Book Project, Round 2

Here’s Round 2 of my collaborative book project with Joan Phillips. She’s added some really cool stuff. Here’s Round 1.

Saturday September 19, 2009.
Tearing up some failed collage books. This one had some good stuff in it that I’ll probably trim down and make into individual framed collages instead.
Accordion Book- new collaborative project

An accordion book in progress for a new collaborative project with local artist Joan Phillips.
Collaborative book project, my book, stage 2

Here’s the book I originally started, with Marci’s additions. Now I’m going to add a few more things and then Marci gets to keep it!
Collaborative book project- Stage 2, Marci’s book

Here are photos of my additions to Marci’s book. It’s going back to her for a few more additions, and then it will come back to me to keep. She gets to keep my book, which she has now and will be sending back to me shortly and I’ll add some more to it. This [...]
Collaborative collage books featured on Scoutie Girl and Modish!

The excellent blogs Scoutie Girl and Modish have featured the collaborative collages made by Alison and I in their Collabo feature that focuses on collaborative art! We each answered a set of questions independently of each other, and one set is on each site. Here’s my interview on Scoutie Girl, and Alison’s interview on Modish.
DailyPhoto 05-13-09 (jury duty)

Wednesday May 13, 2009.
Today I had jury duty. I seem to have a strange knack for being selected for panels that end up not even getting into the courtroom because the defendant decides to take a plea bargain instead of a jury trial. Lots of waiting around, which was actually great since that meant lots [...]

Today I went to the school library for the first time since finishing with my MLA
Collaborative book project- Stage 1, Marci’s book

Here are my photos of the book I received from Marci. This round is all her work; now I get to add to it! (The clamps are not part of the book- I had to use those to keep it open.)
Collaborative book project- Stage 1, my book

Here are photos of the collage book I just sent off to Marci. Read more about our project in my previous post! She has received it and is going to start adding to it. I received her book in the mail today, which I’m going to photograph as well and post later.
10- Day 1 (Shredding)

I decided to see what happens if I glue lots of tiny little scraps of paper to my book.
New Collaborative Project!

I’m excited to have found a new partner in collaborative art adventures, Marci Senders. Check out her Etsy shop too! We were friends in art school what seems like ages ago, although really it’s only almost 10 years. I’m horrible at keeping in touch with people, and I lost track of Marci entirely until she [...]
1000 Novels
I’m a sucker for lists. This morning the Book Design Review blog included a link to a Guardian article called “1000 Novels Everyone Must Read.” Despite the absurd presumptuousness of the idea of “everyone must” anything, and my annoyance with self-appointed cultural arbiters who declare such things, I still find this kind of list interesting. [...]
Alison & Jen Book 2

These images are from the second of a series of collaborative collage books made by Alison Corrie and I. I made the book by hand (accordion format), and then we took turns adding to it- collage, paint, drawing, whatever- building on each other’s work.

Collage books

Here’s a working shot of some of my collage books. I haven’t worked on these in a while because, honestly, I know it is very unlikely that someone will want to buy a whole book. But after a long school-imposed creative drought, it was nice to work on something just for fun and without thinking [...]
Codex Seraphinanus

Codex Seraphinanus is a “collection of original artwork by Italian artist Luigi Serafini, presented as a travelogue or scientific study of an alien world.” All the text in the book is in an imaginary language/code that nobody has ever figured out, and the title is an acronym:
Strange and Extraordinary Representations of Animals and Plants [...]
Xray

This book is from my 1998 semester in Rome. One day the “Sketchbook” class I was taking met at the professor’s studio. There was a huge trunk of materials left there by the previous occupant of the studio, and she told us we could take whatever we wanted. I found a book with clear plastic [...]
The Lost Ship

This book is from 1999 and started out as a hardcover book about sailing ships. I ended up rebinding it after its original binding fell apart. Selected pages here:
Silver

This was a tiny book that started out as a promotional booklet for a Roman clothing store. The etchings were added much later.
