Today I went for a walk at lunch and discovered Woodlands Cemetery. Actually I’ve walked really close to it before but never bothered to go in. I hate most modern cemeteries with their uniform rows of bland grey square-ish headstones and perfectly manicured grass. But I love older ones that are a little more chaotic- a strange hodgepodge of obelisks and angels and small stones with text that has been completely worn away over time and huge ornate memorials and trees and flowers. One of my favorite places in Venice was the Isola di San Michele, an entire cemetery island. Also I remember visiting one in New Orleans that was really interesting. Woodlands was really interesting and I’ll definitely be back to explore more. It was a nice peaceful place to walk, away from the traffic and noise.
