Hello, MoFo!

This October I’ll be participating in Vegan MoFo for the third year!

VeganMoFo was originally created on the Post Punk Kitchen, as an homage to NaNoWriMo.  The goal is to write a whole bunch of posts during the month, all about vegan food. This year I’ve decided to set myself a challenge- use as many new ingredients as I can. These may be ingredients I’ve tasted before, but they must be things I have never prepared myself. They should be ingredients, not things like an entire frozen meal or a soup mix that you just add water to.

Part of my reason for doing this is selfish- trying new things is awesome. I had the best time perusing different stores looking for things I’ve never cooked with before. I love food and do a lot of cooking, but it’s so interesting to know that there are still so many things out there I haven’t tried yet.

But I’m also hoping to put one more nail in the coffin of the dead concept that if you don’t eat animal products you’re missing out on variety and richness and flavor and general interestingness in what you eat. It’s getting better every year, but I’d bet every vegan has a story about going to some wedding or work function and being served The Dreaded Veggie Platter- always steamed, always sauceless, always depressing. Or the inevitable question “how much salad can you eat, anyway?” Well, no, as I (and all my fellow MoFo bloggers) will show this month- just because you don’t do meat, dairy, eggs, etc., doesn’t mean you’re going to be eating twigs and leaves!
