Vegan MoFo! Sausages and Ginger Snaps

veganmofo

Today was very nearly a Vegan MoFo fail. I got stuck late at work and had barely eaten any lunch (yeah, two apples and some peanuts just don’t do it) so I was totally ravenous and didn’t feel like documenting the preparation of my dinner. Which would have been boring anyway since it was just burritos, made with the leftover filling stuff from Sunday’s nachos and a few additions. I tried in a halfhearted manner to photograph the finished burrito but it just wasn’t pretty.

So I thought I’d write about two nice products instead. The first is Field Roast Mexican Chipotle sausages. I’ve never had actual chorizo, but this is what I imagine it to taste like. It probably doesn’t, at all, but I don’t care. These Field Roast sausages are so yummy! And I got them at the awesome tiny little grocery store around the corner from where I live! That place rocks- they also have Sweet & Sara marshmallows and smores, and sometimes Tings, and vegan chocolate covered pretzels, and soymilk and all kinds of stuff. Probably deserves a post all unto itself. Anyway, the sausages. I chopped them up and put them in my burrito and they were delicious. Spicy but not too much so. They’d probably be awesome in a gumbo type thing.

The second product I’m loving today is Sweetzels Spiced Wafers. I don’t know if you can get these outside of the general Philly area- they are “Philadelphia’s Original Ginger Snap.” Every fall stacks of these lovely orange boxes* appear in the grocery stores- it’s as much a sign of fall as colder temperatures and leaves turning. And they’re vegan! Perfect with a nice hot cup of apple cider. Speaking of apple cider, I’m hoping to snag some fresh local cider from the campus farmer’s market tomorrow. Got some last week and it was delicious, then after that was done, I got some commercial cider from the supermarket and it just tasted like thick apple juice. Not awful, just not awesome. Hooray for local produce!

*Packaging design nerd alert! I just realized how you very often don’t actually notice or think about packaging details. I recognize this box instantly, but have never really looked that closely at it before. I love the little smiley woodcut-chef guy at the top. But what are those four rings for? They look like gymnastics apparatus. Is it the Olympics? And I also just noticed the little people in the corner. There is a baker guy holding a tray (he even has teeny oven mitts on!), a boy holding something (?) in his hand, and a dog. All perched on a precipice of cookies, which is apparently in imminent danger of flooding with milk. I wonder if the little people are a throwback to some older packaging?

also, is this mythical store essene? or is it the one in the italian market that’s in danger of closing down soon? (i found sweet and sara smores up in flemington, and that was the closest location i knew of… until now!) :-) ohman the PB smore is amazing!

      supercarrot,

I don’t know that I’ve ever had Ivins, although I could be mixing up the two!

The store is called Joa Mart, it’s in the Mt. Airy area of the city. It opened maybe a year ago, in a building that had been empty for years. We were so excited to have a little store right around the corner, and then even happier when we discovered all the cool stuff they carry! Love the PB smores!

I am from Philly so the release of the Sweetzels Spiced Wafers are like a holiday in itself. Do you know that they have mini cream filled ginger snap cookies that are amazing(and vegan!)? I have had quite a few WTF moments pondering the packaging as well!
